Mission statement: The mission of the Hawaii Pacific Export Council (HPEC) is to promote U.S. exports from Hawaii and the American Pacific Islands by supporting the activities of the US Commercial Service and Hawaii Export Assistance Center, counseling businesses on the exporting process, and conducting trade education programs.

Internship Overview


We currently have three internships available:

1) International Trade Internship

2) International Trade Social Media Internship

3) Shipping and Logistics Trade Internship

International Trade Internship Overview

The International Trade Internship with the local Honolulu office of the U.S. Department of Commerce's U.S. Commercial Service is an unpaid internship for college credit. This dynamic internship provides students with an opportunity to interact with real businesses in the community and work on real world trade issues.

The internship requires completion of at least 4 months with a minimum of 12 hours per week. We can be flexible in working around your school schedule. Openings are available on a rolling basis but usually coincide with the semester schedule. Interviews are usually conducted at our office but can be conducted over the phone.

The Honolulu office operates Monday - Friday.

 

Requirements

Must be a U.S. Citizen. Position is an unpaid internship. Applicants must fulfill minimum hourly requirements. Must be enrolled at least part-time in a college or university.

 

Major Areas of Study

All Business Majors, Economics, Political Science, Public Administration, Law, International Studies and Relations, Marketing, Finance, Foreign Language, Communications, Sociology, Geography and History.

 

Daily Internship Activities

  • Provide support to International Trade Specialists in outreach, market research, trade promotion, and international trade and policy development
  • Meet with real companies to learn about their export challenges and counsel them on solutions and available resources
  • Research and analysis on commercial markets in Asia, Europe, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East
  • Collaboration with local Hawaii Pacific Export Council members in conducting export outreach and education training programs
  • Opportunity to take part in trade development meetings with American and foreign government officials and executives in key industries
  • Research on policy and regulatory issues impacting trade with global markets
  • Update and management of export resources website
  • Publishing of quarterly newsletter on international trade news
  • Promotion of industry trade events and training programs
  • Database management of key contacts

International Trade Social Media Internship Overview

The International Trade Social Media Internship is an unpaid internship for college credit that will support the mission of the local Honolulu office of the U.S. Department of Commerce's U.S. Commercial Service and the local Honolulu office of the District Export Council’s Hawaii Pacific Export Council. This dynamic internship provides students with an opportunity to interact with real businesses in the community and work on real world trade issues, while creating a compelling and meaningful online presence for these organizations.

The internship will begin in spring and requires completion of at least 5 months, with a preference given to potential interns that are also available during the fall semester, at approximately 5-10 hours per week. We can be flexible in working around your school schedule. Interviews are usually conducted at our office but can be conducted over the phone. The Honolulu office operates Monday -
Friday. Intern will likely work from office located in Manoa (5-10 minutes from UH campus).

  • Opportunity to take part in trade development meetings with American and foreign government officials and executives in key industries.
  • Research on policy and regulatory issues impacting trade with global markets.
  • Update and management of export resources website.
  • Publishing of quarterly newsletter on international trade news.
  • Promotion of industry trade events and training programs.

Shipping and Logistics Trade Internship Overview

The Shipping and Logistics Trade Internship is an unpaid internship for college credit with either with the local Honolulu office of the District Export Council’s Hawaii Pacific Export Council, which supports the mission of the Department of Commerce’s U.S. Commercial Service. This dynamic internship provides students with an opportunity to interact with real businesses in the community and work on real world trade issues.

This special internship appointment will support the objectives of a grant that provides shipping and logistics training to businesses around the island. The internship will begin in spring and requires completion of at least 5 months with a minimum of 10 hours per week during the semester, with an increase to at least 20 during the summer. A preference given to potential interns who are also available during the fall semester, at 10 hours per week. We can be flexible in working around your school schedule. Interviews are usually conducted at our office but can be conducted over the phone. The Honolulu office operates Monday - Friday. Intern will likely work from office located in Manoa (5- 10 minutes from UH campus).

The internship requires availability to travel to neighbor islands for day trips during the summer to assist the Project Director in facilitation of the shipping training for Hawaii companies. The training titled, the Shipping Worldwide, Interstate, and Interisland Fair (SWIF) will give Hawaii companies the information, tools, and confidence they need to complete off island transactions. By providing guidance on specific routing and shipping options, via one-on-one meetings with shipping experts from a number of local, domestic, and international providers, Hawaii companies will be better equipped to face the challenges of shipping from an island state. SWIF will also include visits to shipping facilities and opportunities to practice filling out shipping documents (like Airway Bills, etc.). The Intern will provide support in planning and executing the trainings, as well as promoting and following up with participants.

  • Meet with local companies to learn about export challenges and provide solutions and resources.
  • Database management of key contacts.
  • Collaborate with state agencies to plan and execute the training fairs.
  • Work with large- and small-scale shippers to ensure participation as experts in the training fair.
  • Promote SWIF through media contacts by penning press releases, social media outreach, etc.
  • Travel to neighbor islands to assist the Project Director in executing the SWIF trainings
  • (all travel costs are covered).
  • Collaboration with local Hawaii Pacific Export Council members in conducting export outreach and education training programs.
  • Opportunity to take part in trade development meetings with American and foreign government official and executives in key industries.
  • Research on policy and regulatory issues impacting trade with global markets.
  • Update and management of export resources website.
